Update to ASTM standard C1458 – Update of the ASTM standard on calorimetry of Tritium, Plutonium and Americium
The 2016 version of ASTM C1458, entitled “Standard Test Method for Nondestructive Assay of Plutonium, Tritium and Am-241 by Calorimetric Assay” was reaching its final year of validity. ASTM updated and rewrote the text, which serves as a reference for many users.
A number of changes have been made, including adjustments to the standard’s scope of application, as well as clarifications of the definitions of terms specific to this standard. In addition, it has been adapted to use only units from the international system, and to follow ASTM recommendations in terms of form and style. Finally, the reference values and their significant figures have been verified and updated.
What are ASTM standards for?
ASTM standards play a crucial role in a globalized industry. Why is this so important?
- Faster measurement implementation: By relying on recognized standards, professionals can quickly implement effective measurement practices.
- Comparability of results: Standards make it possible to compare results with other users, ensuring greater consistency and reliability.
- Benefit of collective expertise: Standards are the fruit of the experience and agreement of experts in the field, providing a solid, proven basis for measurement practices.
They provide standardized means of measurement and methods of use specific to each industrial field. ASTM C1458 brings these advantages to the field of tritium, plutonium and americium calorimetry.

And where does Setsafe come in?
Setsafe and KEP Technologies are involved in the C26 committee on the nuclear cycle, and more specifically in sub-committee C26.10, on non-destructive analysis methods. This sub-committee brings together laboratories handling nuclear materials, users of non-destructive analysis methods, nuclear measurement specialists, independent technical experts, and KEP as the sole manufacturer of calorimetry solutions.
KEP Technologies had the opportunity to play a leading role in the discussions on the revision of this C1458 standard.
Because the safety and quality of our measurements is our priority, we are committed to helping our industry evolve.
